June 9 (Mon) The Dickens family leave Genoa and proceed via Milan, Como, the St Gothard Pass, Zurich, Frankfurt, and down the Rhine to Cologne, to Brussels, where they are joined (27th) by JF, Maclise and Jerrold. 30 They leave Brussels for Ghent, Bruges and Ostend. July 3 (Thurs) They arrive in London and return to 1 Devonshire Terrace. Early in July CD tells JF that he has an idea for a weekly periodical to be called The Cricket; the idea is soon abandoned, but towards the end of the month he tells JF that the cricket would provide'a delicate and beautiful fancy for a Christmas book'.
20 Hears the Rev. Edward Tagart preach at the Unitarian Chapel in Little Portland Street; CD subsequently takes sittings in the chapel for himself and his family, and often attends services there.
