July 3 (Thurs) They arrive in London and return to 1 Devonshire Terrace. Early in July CD tells JF that he has an idea for a weekly periodical to be called The Cricket; the idea is soon abandoned, but towards the end of the month he tells JF that the cricket would provide'a delicate and beautiful fancy for a Christmas book'.

Then they proceed to Chalons; go 44 A Dickens Chronology by steamboat down the Rhone to Lyons; by road again to Aix and Marseilles, probably arriving in the latter city on 14 July and leaving on the 15th by boat for Genoa.
